In the Sixties Timm Ulrichs pleads for art to be kept out of the galleries and museums, and sets an example. Invited to create a one-man show, he sterilises the exhibition rooms with a variety of disinfecting agents, puts down rat poison and seals the gallery. At the blocked-off entrance door there hangs the sign: ‘Betreten der Ausstellung verboten!’ – ‘Do not enter the exhibition!’ (Kabinett für aktuelle Kunst, Bremerhaven 1970). 1969 the prototype sign was produced as a two-colour screen print on aluminium (Collection Sprengel Museum, Hanover). 2007 the big sign was released as Collector’s edition, followed by the postcard size museum’s shop edition in 2008.
